Domestic cruises cover far more of the country than most people realize. Here is where they sail, region by region, with links to our dedicated sites rather than repeating them.

Coast, River or Island?

Coastal small-ship cruises hop between harbors in New England, the Chesapeake, the Southeast and the Pacific Northwest. Days are short sails and long port stops, ideal for history, seafood and lighthouses.

River cruises on the Mississippi, Columbia and Snake, Ohio, Tennessee and Hudson feel slower and very American: paddlewheels, river towns, Civil War sites and wine country. Our US River Cruising site explains how U.S. river cruising works.

Island and wilderness cruises mean Hawaii on Pride of America or Alaska on a small ship: big scenery, wildlife and, in Alaska, glaciers close enough to hear.

Planning Domestic Cruises for 2026 and 2027

Domestic ships are small and popular, especially with travelers who book well ahead, so peak weeks — New England foliage, Alaska in July, the Mississippi in spring and autumn — can fill early. If you are flexible, shoulder weeks at the start and end of each region’s season usually have more choice. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can check which ships sail your region on your dates.

Pairing a Domestic Cruise With a Land Trip

Because every port is in the U.S., a domestic cruise combines easily with a road trip or a few days in a city. Fly into New Orleans a day early for a Mississippi sailing, add Portland or Seattle to a Columbia River cruise, spend a weekend in Boston before New England, or stay on Oahu after Pride of America. There is no customs line at the end, so you simply walk off and carry on. Local guides for those cities are on Best of the USA.

Not sure which region to start with? Think about the season you can travel. Winter points to Hawaii or Florida’s rivers, spring and autumn to the Mississippi and the Southeast, summer to Alaska, the Great Lakes and New England, and early fall to the Hudson and New England foliage.
